Tzedakah
Tzedakah is the Hebrew word that is used for philanthropy and charity. It is a form of social justice in which donors benefit from giving as much or more than the recipients. So much more than a financial transaction, tzedakah builds trusting relationships and includes contributions of time, effort, and insight.
For his Bar Mitzvah, Brad has chosen two charities that are meaningful to him. Brad is encouraging guests to make charitable donations in lieu of gifts. Below are two suggestions for causes that are meaningful to him.
Samaritan House
Brad has been feeding the hungry for years through our synagogue PTBE’s “SSH” program. Once a month we prepare bag lunches (either at home or at PTBE) and take them to the Samaritan House to feed those in need. Brad would like to support this and other Samaritan House programs and will be talking about the importance of helping the poor during his “Dvar Torah” talk during his Bar Mitzvah.
Founded in 1974, Samaritan House is the largest food distribution agency in San Mateo County. Our free service offerings include shelter and housing assistance; medical and dental clinics; clothes for children; personalized case management and much more. Each year, we provide services and resources to more than 26,000 low-income and homeless residents in need, including families with children, seniors and individuals living with a disability, veterans and homeless adults.
Dan is excited that Brad is supporting this worthy charity as he works closely with a colleague who is on the board of the Samaritan House.
Sarcoma Foundation of America (Technoblade Tribute)
Brad is a passionate Minecraft player, and he chose this charity in honor of Technoblade, a Minecraft YouTuber who died of Sarcoma. The Minecraft community has already raised over $1M for Sarcoma research in his honor. Brad really hopes a lot of people donate.
The mission of the Sarcoma Foundation of America (SFA) is to advocate for sarcoma patients by funding research and by increasing awareness about the disease. The organization raises money to privately fund grants for sarcoma researchers and conducts education and advocacy efforts on behalf of sarcoma patients.
